Although very painful, a ruptured intervertebral disc may be treated.  There are conservative treatments and aggressive treatments.  Conservative herniated disc treatment involves of ways to alleviate pain gradually.  Resting of the back is required.  By resting, the body allows the herniated part of the disc to be reabsorbed by the vertebrae and heal.  Hot or cold packs can also help relieve the pain.  Massages and physical therapy can also adjust the bulging of the disc and gradually move it back in place.  Steroidal injections may also be injected to the place where there is severe pain as a mode of pain killer.  

The pain caused by a herniated disc may go away in a few weeks.  But there are some pains which can last a couple of months.  The best treatment for the pain is regular exercise and strengthening of the spinal column.  Protecting the spine and keeping it healthy is important because it holds the entire body together.
